Muzzle Loaders Association of Great Britain
Muzzle Loaders and Muzzle Loading
The Muzzle Loaders Association of Great Britain was formed in 1952 and is the Governing Body for muzzle loading within the UK. Its objectives are to encourage an interest in muzzle loading firearms; to promote, regulate and safeguard their use; and to preserve their freedom of collection.
The MLAGB has its own ranges on the outskirts of Warwick, and also makes extensive use of the National Rifle Association ranges at Bisley. A network of local branches provides access to clubs throughout the country, where training and guidance can be found.
For Shooters
Perhaps the best known MLAGB meeting is the Schützenfest. Here traditional hand painted wooden schützen targets supplement more conventional targets, while a hefty programme covers a variety of arms from matchlock muskets at 50 metres through to percussion match rifles at 1000 yards.
National clay championships cater for a variety of muzzle loading shotgun classes including, wildfowling guns and flintlocks as well as conventional single and double barrel events. Additionally, shooting with muzzle loading pistols has become immensely popular. Flintlocks, percussion revolvers, duellers and target pistols are all catered for in a busy calendar of events.
And Collectors
Many members are also - or primarily - collectors of antique arms and accessories and the MLAGB is proud of the part it plays in encouraging the preservation, study and research of our colourful and historic past. Specialised knowledge is widely available to newcomers and authoritative articles in our newsletters are appreciated worldwide.
Regular MLAGB arms fairs and auctions are great fun and provide a chance for a bargain.
