Play Ultimate“When a ball dreams, it becomes a Frisbee”

Ultimate is quickly becoming the new generation sport for the thinking man and woman.

Played with a flying disc or Frisbee, Ultimate is a fast-moving, athletic, team sport played both indoors and out. It is also one of the few team sports in the UK where men and women play shoulder to shoulder on the sports field.

UltimateThe sport originated in the 1960’s on the front lawns of Yale University, USA, played by students killing time between lectures, passing a plastic disc between them. Ultimate came to the UK in the early 1970’s, and was embraced at many Universities as an alternative to the traditional range of sporting activities.

The sport gradually evolved into a more competitive team game, played with a solid ethic as its backbone known as the ‘spirit of the game’. Ultimate does not need a referee; all disputes are sorted out between players on the pitch. The ‘spirit of the game’ encourages players to resolve conflicts between themselves rather than have to have a third party make a decision for them. The skill and fitness levels required at top level Ultimate would challenge any athlete, but being able to read the game, predict the moves, and develop strategy on the field are also key aspects.

Play FrisbeeThere is a major Ultimate team in almost every city and town. There are small geographical patches of the UK that haven’t been infected with the Ultimate bug, but they are becoming few and far between.

The sport is represented by its own association - the UK Ultimate Association (UKUA) – which is responsible for the growth, development and promotion of Ultimate in Great Britain.

Currently, there are over 200 teams in the UK, with in excess of 1500 players registered with the association. Ultimate is always looking to welcome new players that not only want to play, but want to become part of the social circuit that encircles the sport.

Sally Quigg is the chairwoman of the PR & Sponsorship Board, and Wayne Retter & Alia Ayub are members of the board.
